Quality Policy
We consider quality to be a joint concern. It encompasses all aspects of our business – from product development and the selection of suppliers to conscientious manufacture and reliable sales & distribution.
Sustainability
As a processor and producer of foodstuffs, we have a great responsibility to the public. We are committed to sustainability, because the great feeling we convey through wholesome foods doesn’t stop at the edge of the plate. Here you will find a selection of our commitments. We always strive to continue improving in this area.
Packaging
Packaging serves many functions. It protects products, guarantees good hygiene, and helps with portioning and declaration. Plastic packaging and the associated impacts on nature are often a controversial topic. Here you will find useful information about packaging and our specific know-how.
Commitment
Ospelt, with its five production facilities, has a large number of employees from various countries reflecting diverse cultural backgrounds and varied levels of education. Despite the considerable differences, we are one big family. Conscious of the fact that we can achieve our goals only by working together, we are dedicated to our employees every day.
Raw materials and their origins
We use only premium, rigorously inspected raw materials.
We purchase the majority of our raw materials from domestic or regional suppliers.
Personal interaction and long-standing supplier relations are key. Over half of our suppliers have been our partners for more than 5 years.
We use pork from Switzerland exclusively for our own Malbuner brand. In recent years we have reduced the fat and sodium content in many of our products.
We keep a holistic view on our supply chain with 3 focuses:
- Quality assurance and product safety
- Ensuring the supply and sustainability of raw materials
- Financial aspects

All Ospelt suppliers hold generally recognised certificates of quality and are routinely audited both internally and externally. Certificates include: ASC (Aquaculture Stewardship Council), Organic, BRC Global Standard for Food Safety, EnAW Energy Agency, FOS (Friend of the Sea), IFS (International Featured Standard), ISO, SQMS (McDonald’s Supplier Quality Management System), Suisse Garantie, MAW (Migros Animal Welfare), SWA (Supplier Workplace Accountability).

Quality and Hygiene
In addition to unannounced external audits, we regularly audit our own facilities.
The internal quality department at each location regularly audits the factory through site inspections.
As part of our supplier management we regularly audit our suppliers, including with the help of external auditors, and help them to continue making improvements.
Our production facilities have implemented extensive monitoring systems to randomly inspect microbiological, sensory and analytical criteria in production.
We have established mandatory quality standards for every production step before a product is approved for the next manufacturing process, such as temperatures and exposure time for heating processes, duration of the smoking process, degree of drying, etc.
Our production facilities are highly streamlined. Some of the production lines are internal company developments and therefore optimally tailored to the specific manufacturing processes. As a result, our products reach shelves in the shortest possible time and while still fresh.
Our employees are continuously trained in product safety and quality.
Access to our facilities is strictly limited and only permitted with hygiene clothing including safety shoes and bonnets. Critical areas can only be accessed through hygiene locks.
Animal Welfare
For products made with Swiss meat, we process raw materials complying with Swiss animal welfare standards. The animal welfare standards lay down basic parameters such as free-range conditions, natural light, livestock density, at least 8 hours of continuous darkness per day and no antibiotics or hormones to boost production in breeding.
Various standards to which we are committed include or are specifically aimed at animal welfare.
Continuously making improvements to benefit animal welfare is something we take extremely seriously.

Occupational Health and Safety
A safety officer appointed for each facility is the contact person for all employees and additionally supports managers regarding their responsibilities in implementing safety provisions in the workplace.
We conduct a risk assessment for each workplace, carry out audits of compliance with the laws and implement appropriate measures to correct hazards and strain. All employees receive appropriate safety training.
Incidents jeopardizing safety as well as all accidents are analysed promptly and the necessary measures taken. As a guarantee thereof, we have implemented the “Occupational Safety Internal Reporting System”.
Environment and Energy
Our facilities in Apolda (Germany) use thermal discharge and operate combined heat and power units. Both facilities have an ISO 50001 energy management system and are certified to this standard. Several of our production facilities use energy-efficient LED lighting.
Our production facilities are continuously being modernised and aligned with cutting-edge technologies. As a result, environmental pollution can be kept as low as possible. New processes are tested to determine their environmental sustainability and energy efficiency.
Our waste disposal strategy operates according to the principle of avoid, reduce and recycle.
Our production plants separate waste material according to these recyclable categories: plastics, wood, cardboard, metals, electronic waste and hazardous waste. The cooling devices use natural refrigerants which are easier to recycle
Company Mobility Management
We promote car pools and soft mobility by bike and public transportation. Employees using alternative transportation receive a mobility bonus.
However, our commitment doesn’t stop within the company but also extends to the local region and beyond. This is demonstrated by our participation in the mobility group of the Liechtenstein Chamber of Commerce and Industry and our involvement in the PEMO project (sustainable commuter mobility) covering the four-country region Germany-Austria-Switzerland-Liechtenstein.

Importance of Packaging
- Consumer Service
Consumers find important information on packaging such as manufacturer, ingredients, nutritional values, country of origin, expiration date, labels, etc. This information is subject to the duty of declaration and provides consumers with details about the product. The name, design and logos are also part of our consumer service with the aim of helping to navigate the sea of products. - Portioning
Packaging allows products to be offered in different sizes. Single-person households have different needs than large families. The packaging also aids with logistics, i.e. transport and storage. Appropriate sizes and units tailored to logistics help to reduce waste from packaging. - Hygiene and Protection
In the food industry, hygiene and product protection are particularly important topics. The right packaging for the product helps maintain quality. For pasteurisation and sterilisation, packaging must be airtight to ensure shelf life. Packaging protects products in the interest of the consumer.
